NEW KIT- Visual Aid to Alternate Version

MKT 96107lr

Southern Car and Foundry is starting to ship their newest kit for the MKT single sheathed boxcar.  The prototype is a classic Howe truss with “Z” exterior posts. The kit can be  built as a 95000 series with Camel #32 door hardware or the 96000 series with National hardware.   The door tracks are different as are the guides on the lower part of the side.

The kit instructions has a limited amount of information on the National guide installation.   I thought that it would help to add information to my blog to aid those who choose this version to build.

The rest of kit is built the same for either of the car series.

I used the new Protocraft coupler and a cut down draft gear to fit in the profile of the center sill.

Hope that the pictures help in the kit assembly.

  1. Looks good! I remember moving to Austin TX in the summer of 1962 and spotting a yellow MKT car across the street from a tavern with western movie style saloon doors — great combination!

  2. Gene, thanks for the post and photos . Guess I need to order one NOW.

You got my curiosity going. What’s the timber taped to the side for?

  3. Gene-not shown on the SC&F website-sre the kits available, or for future sale-he does show one open kit?? Regards, Jesse

  4. Gene:
Thank you for your timely info. I e-mailed him an order to him when you first described in in your blog. He replied he would notify me when it was ready and I have yet to hear from him. Appears to be an excellent model.

It has been extremely busy period for Jon Cagle with architectural models keeping the MKT project on the shelf.
He should be shipping within a week.

  5. Gene,

Your work looks great! The kit looks fantastic. Thank you for providing the additional information & help on construction of the kit.
Which trucks did you use for this car? Are these San Juan or Protocraft trucks? I am ordering the car kit from Jon today.
