RAILWAY MUSEUMS: A Hidden Gem in Nevada

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is that hidden gem.
Today, you can see a large collection of restored steam locomotives and cars that not only look beautiful but they run as well.   In addition, the museum performed a monumental restoration of the only remaining McKeen gas mechanical car.  The car was built in 1910 by the McKeen Motor Car Company of Omaha, Nebraska.  The car ran from Reno to Minden in the south.  The last run was in 1945.  The car was sold to become a diner and later an office for a plumbing company.  The car was secured and restoration started in 1996. The car rolled out in 2010 for its initial run.

 

Visiting the museum will be a wonderful feast for your eyes.   The restored V&T Inyo, Dayton, #25 and #27 are there for your enjoyment.   In addition, the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Glenbrook narrow gauge 2-6-0 is fully restored and operational.  This loco was built by Baldwin in 1875.  The Nevada County Narrow Gauge had a sister engine which has survived and is on display in Nevada City, CA.

The V&T had some new power like #25 and #27.  Number 25 is in running condition.

The admission fee is $6 for adults and is well worth it.   You will find the museum conveniently located on US 395 just south of downtown Carson City, Nevada. It is open Thursday through Sunday during the winter months.    If there is a complaint, it is the lack of space for photography.   Oh yes, they do operate their classic steam during the summer.

The museum held a wonderful collection of scale models of V&T equipment.   I will post more on this in the future.
